Travel by road is medium risk. Road surface conditions are below the standard recognized by western travelers however, most major cities are generally adequate.  Rural roads are unsafe and poorly constructed with no road markings, reduced visibility due to poor lighting and dusty surfaces, and unexpected hazards are frequent. Most Saudi drivers are known to drive erratically while traveling through remote locations and these roads are considered dangerous.

Road Traffic Collisions (RTCs) are frequent and are a result of inadequate driver training, lack of road discipline and excessive speeding.  Saudi drivers are also known to travel without lights, and many vehicles are poorly maintained.  World Health Organization (WHO) have advised Saudi Arabia as having one of the highest death rates in the world as a result of RTCs.
