Port-au-Prince Secure Transportation Services

ETS Security Overview - Haiti

Haiti is considered a high-risk destination.  Port au Prince is particularly vulnerable due to the increased level of tourism. Crime, particularly violent crime, is a significant concern fuelled by ongoing political instability and lawlessness. The most common threats include drug-related shootouts, kidnappings, armed robberies and car-jackings.  Criminal gangs are known to follow their victims to quieter areas before committing the crime or use motorbikes to perform an ambush style attack.  Intimidation tactics are commonly used to induce fear into the victims.  It is highly likely armed violence will be used if the victims resist.  Most crime involving foreign nationals occurs in areas where tourists are typically located, for example, restaurants, beaches, hotels and airports.

Road travel in Haiti is considered high risk.  Visitors can expect road surfaces to be mainly dirt tracks with inadequate markings and few road signs.  Road traffic laws are not enforced, which can result in much travel disruption within the region.  Drivers are recognized to drive recklessly and at speeds not suited to the road conditions.  Criminal gangs may take advantage of vehicles held in traffic for smash and grab opportunities.

Public transport should be avoided due to the increased risk to your personal safety.
