Criminal activity in Nassau is high and includes both violent and non-violent crime.  Crime increases in central city locations, but a risk is present throughout the Bahamas. Most incidents are targets of opportunity such as muggings, pickpocketing and snatching personal belongings. This happens at a much higher frequency in crowded areas or during the hours of darkness.  Armed violence does exist and the threat to foreign travelers is increasing.  Criminals are known to follow their victims and will likely use violence if they attempt to resist.

The standard of driving in the Bahamas is below the level recognized by the U.S.   Local drivers can travel at excessive speeds where road conditions are unsafe.  Unpredictable and erratic driving is common.  Drink driving remains a concern, although this is illegal.  There is a high risk of road traffic collisions (RTCs) due to the poor driving standards and road conditions.
