Cape Town has high crime levels with the main issues being violent crime and robbery. Although Cape Town does not see the levels of violence that Jo'burg has seen, there have been recent increases of xenophobic violence; Increase of violent incidents against ground transportation and persons in transit; rape and sexual violence, and civil unrest. South Africa’s murder rates remain well above both the global and U.S. averages.
It is advised that any arrival into the airport is met in-person at arrivals by a trusted individual and escorted to the vehicle. The roads to and from the airport into Cape Town are considered medium to low risk, though do become more dangerous at night-time hours and variable on your destination. There is always a risk of being targeted in vehicles when stationary at junctions or held in traffic. The most common crimes being smash and grabs, or car-jacking - though these can develop into other crimes such as Express Kidnap and Assault.
