The political situation has somewhat stabilized after the attempted 2016 coup of the government. Because of this attempted coup, a state of emergency was put in place and only ended in July 2018. Despite the state of emergency measures being lifted some of the restrictions remain in place. Because of this sporadic demonstration take place due to the non-removal of certain restrictions. Some of these demonstrations have turned violent where protests and security forces have clashed in numerous cites throughout Turkey.
Turkey is considered to be at high risk of terror attacks. Some of the most targeted attack locations have been in Istanbul and Ankara. There have also been incidents in other major cities as well. Some of the targets have been public gatherings, government offices, security forces, and also civilians. Western interests and foreigners, particularly in the major Turkish cities have also been targeted. Despite this Turkish security forces have been able to prevent terror attacks due to the tightening of security protocols.
Numerous extremist groups are operating in Turkey. Many have carried out acts of terrorism. Some of these terrorist and anti-government groups are Daesh, who are based out of Syria, The Turkish Freedom Hawks, the Turkish Liberation party, and the Revolutionary People’s front. In addition to these the PKK, who are aligned with the Kurds in Iraq and Syria have also targeted government installations and security forces.
Additionally, there is a heightened risk of terrorist attacks against the aviation industry in Turkey which has led to the International Civil Aviation Organization to investigate and audit the safety standards to ensure they are at an acceptable level. Istanbul airport was subject to a high-level multi-wave marauding armed attack in 2016 that killed multiple civilians.
Border areas are considered high risk, especially where Turkey shares the border with Syria and Iraq. There are currently ongoing military operations in these areas between the Turkish military and the Kurdish population.
Generally, crime levels are low, but street robbery and pickpocketing are common in the major tourist areas of Ankara. Avoid traveling by road at night. Accidents are common and mainly due to poor or reckless driving.
